The name Midnight Snack comes from a distinct childhood memory of my father waking my sister and I up late at night to share sneaky desserts. These little midnight snack rendezvous stopped once my mom caught on as to why all our Little Debbie snacks were vanishing at alarming rates, but it kickstarted a love affair for sweets that is still very much a part of me.

AND IT'S BEEN A GROWING LOVE AFFAIR EVER SINCE.

I BAKED MY FIRST CAKE WHEN I WAS eight years old.

I admired from across the kitchen island as she whipped up a new homemade dinner every night, or baked an array of desserts for my teachers at the end of each school year. The way she could take a few ingredients and produce a batch of cookies, a cake, or a delicious roast seemed like magic to me. But what was even more interesting was the effect that food, especially good homemade food, had on the people she shared it with.

Seeing the joy in someone's eyes when she delivered them a batch of peanut butter truffles was enough to make me want to do the same. So, I asked my parents for my first cookbook and became obsessed with baking. The first cake I made was a caramel layer cake with homemade fondant, and it was... terrible. Literally, the worst.

growing up,
the kitchen was
my mom's domain.

My love affair with food has taken me on a journey to becoming a much better baker. For me, good food is both the comfort you need on a tough day and the necessary part of any celebration. It's a way to say "I'm sorry", "thanks", "get well soon", and "I love you". Today, Midnight Snack is still very much the spirit of those late night snacks I had with my dad as a kid. I hope you find a recipe in here that you can share with someone you love and make your own memories around the dessert plate.

thankfully i've improved since then.
